Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D., led a Republican conference meeting on May 1, 2024, to address the broken budget process in the United States. In a statement released ahead of the meeting, Senator Marshall emphasized the importance of tackling the nation's historic national debt crisis.

"Today, we will sit down as a conference and discuss solutions to fixing our broken budget process. Our nation is facing a historic national debt crisis that we must address- no more hollow talking points and budget gimmicks to keep the lights on in the federal government," Senator Marshall said.

Senator Marshall highlighted the urgency of the situation, criticizing the current approach to budgeting in Washington, D.C. He stated, "Washington, D.C. consistently acts like they are playing with house money – with no fear of budget deadline submissions and no respect for the law and budgeting process. It’s time we start running the government like a business."

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration within the conference, Senator Marshall acknowledged the collective effort required to address the debt crisis and secure future prosperity. "I’m very grateful for the entire conference pitching in and working on this crucial issue together," he said. "It will take all of us for this to become law and ensure that our grandchildren can live the American dream."

Senator Marshall, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, is advocating for strict enforcement of budgeting deadlines outlined in the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974. He aims to ensure that consequences are in place if these deadlines are not met, rallying support within the conference for this initiative.
