On Sunday, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas appeared on NewsNation’s The Hill Sunday with Chris Stirewalt to discuss the Republican reconciliation bill. The Senate is set to vote on the bill soon, and Senator Marshall addressed various aspects of it.

Marshall credited President Trump, John Thune, John Barrasso, and JD Vance for their efforts in advancing the bill. He said that both sides expressing dissatisfaction might indicate progress: “Both sides are saying they’re unhappy – we’re probably right over the target.”

He emphasized the importance of extending the debt limit to avoid negative impacts on debt and bond ratings: “I think what your listeners need to understand … is we’re extending this debt limit.”

Marshall also discussed maintaining cuts within the bill: “There are too many great things in this bill to vote for.” He highlighted border security funding and tax cuts as benefits, stating that it could mean “$1,000 a month to hard-working Kansans back home.”

Regarding Medicaid spending, Marshall assured that it would increase above inflation rates: “We are actually increasing spending on Medicaid over the next years.” He praised Susan Collins and Rick Scott for securing $25 billion for rural hospitals.

Finally, he urged focusing on positive aspects when discussing with constituents: “What you didn’t show is that if you address these one title at a time, it actually polls positively.”
