U.S. Senator Roger Marshall recently appeared on RFD-TV’s Market Day Report with Tammi Arender to discuss initiatives aimed at protecting American farmland from foreign ownership, particularly by China. He highlighted concerns about Chinese purchases of land near military bases and their involvement in the meatpacking industry through companies like Smithfield and Brazilian JBS.

Senator Marshall emphasized the role of Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture, who will now be part of CFIUS, a committee overseeing foreign land purchases. He stated, “The bottom line: food security is national security.”

Regarding potential retaliatory measures by China, Marshall noted the reciprocal nature of trade agreements and mentioned actions taken by Arkansas Governor Huckabee Sanders to reverse Chinese land purchases.

Discussing the One Big Beautiful Bill, Senator Marshall outlined significant benefits for farmers and ranchers, including $50 billion more for crop insurance and increased reference prices funded for five years. The bill also addresses tax exemptions and depreciation allowances crucial for agricultural investments.

Looking ahead to future legislation, Marshall acknowledged current political divisions but expressed optimism about working on soil health improvements with officials like Secretary Kennedy and Rollins. He sees opportunities in regenerative agriculture as part of upcoming farm bills.
