U.S. Senators Roger Marshall and Tommy Tuberville have introduced the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act, a legislative effort aimed at providing tax relief to American workers earning overtime wages. This initiative is in line with a promise made by former President Donald Trump to support lower and middle-income Americans through tax deductions.
The bill, which is cosponsored by Senators Pete Ricketts and Jim Justice, seeks to create an income tax deduction specifically for those earning overtime wages. Senator Marshall emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating, “President Trump promised relief for millions of hardworking Americans, and we’re proud to help deliver on that with the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act.” He further added that the legislation aims to ensure workers keep more of their earnings.
Senator Tuberville echoed these sentiments, highlighting the necessity of rewarding those who work beyond standard hours without imposing higher taxes. “Thousands of Alabamians put in way more than 40 hours a week… They should not be punished with higher taxes for working longer hours,” he said.
Senator Ricketts pointed out the benefits for specific groups such as law enforcement officers and nurses in Nebraska. Meanwhile, Senator Justice noted that the bill supports individuals who contribute significantly through extra shifts and extended hours.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has expressed its support for the bill. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien stated, “Thanks to the leadership of Sen. Marshall and a commitment by President Trump to put American workers first, the Teamsters Union proudly supports the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act.”
