Rep. Sharice Davids, who represents Kansas’ 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on social media addressing Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the ongoing government shutdown. Davids, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, highlighted her commitment to Native communities and the impact of federal government closures on her constituents.
On October 13, 2025, Davids marked Indigenous Peoples’ Day by reflecting on her heritage and legislative role. She wrote, “On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, I’m reflecting on the strength, resilience, & brilliance of Native communities across the country. As a Ho-Chunk, I’m proud to carry our stories & voices to Congress. I’ll keep working to ensure Native people are seen, heard, & respected every day.”
Later that day, Davids addressed the effects of the government shutdown on local projects and residents. She stated, “A government shutdown has real consequences. Just ask Sarah, who says flood mitigation projects are now at risk. I’m working to get the government reopened — but in the meantime, read more here: https://t.co/fCTKKMopy4”
Continuing her focus on the shutdown’s local repercussions, Davids posted on October 14, 2025: “Kansans can’t afford Washington’s chaos. I’m working to reopen the government and keep lowering costs for families. https://t.co/23z3oPMqE5”
Davids has served as Kansas’s 3rd District representative since 2019 after succeeding Kevin Yoder. Born in Frankfurt, West Germany in 1980 and currently residing in Roeland Park, she holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Cornell University.
