U.S. Representative Sharice Davids, who serves Kansas’s 3rd district, has raised concerns on social media about the potential expiration of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits and the ongoing government shutdown, highlighting the impact on her constituents and her personal connection to the issues.
On October 7, 2025, Davids shared a story about a constituent facing high medical costs without the aid of health insurance tax credits. She wrote, “Dawn’s cancer treatments would cost $5K a week without health insurance tax credits. She says without them, she couldn’t afford her home. They expire this year — and she’s terrified. Congress must act now to extend these savings.”
The following day, Davids detailed the financial impact on Kansas families if the ACA tax credits were to expire, posting on October 8, 2025: “If ACA tax credits expire this year, health care costs will skyrocket in #KS03: 60-year-old couple: +$16,972/year Family of 4: +$7,041/year Kansas families can’t afford that. Congress must act NOW.”
Later that same day, Davids reflected on her own upbringing and the risks of the current government shutdown, stating, “My mom served in the Army and raised my brothers and me on her own — missing even one paycheck would’ve meant the lights go out. We must work together to end the shutdown.”
Sharice Davids has represented Kansas’s 3rd District in the U.S. Congress since 2019, succeeding Kevin Yoder. She was born in Frankfurt, West Germany in 1980 and resides in Roeland Park. Davids holds a BA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a JD from Cornell University.
The ACA tax credits are designed to make health insurance more affordable for Americans; their expiration could lead to significant increases in out-of-pocket costs for families across the country.
