Wildcats Fight to the End, Fall to No. 8 Central Methodist at Home, 3-1

Moving towards the end of the regular season, the Baker women's soccer team fell to No. 8 Central Methodist on Wednesday, 3-1.

"I am very proud of the girls," head coach Sara Matthews said. "We have battled through a lot of adversity in the injury department this year, and to see the collective unit never give up and continue to be hungry in practice and games is a huge testament to the character of this group."

Central Methodist took 35 shots throughout the game, with 15 being on goal, while Baker took a total of four shots with two on goal. Gabby Elliiott played all 90 minutes in goal, working hard to make 12 saves in the game.

Central Methodist was able to get on the board first, scoring in the 14th minute, then following it up with another goal in the 16th minute to hold a 2-0 lead. After another goal from the Eagles in the 28th minute, CMU led Baker, 3-0.

In the 33rd minute, Annika Munch took a shot from distance which snuck inside the near post, scoring Baker's only goal of the game and cutting the lead to 3-1 heading into halftime. CMU was able to get off 21 shots throughout the second half, but Baker would buckle down defensively and Elliott made eight saves to hold the score where it was as Baker lost, 3-1.

"We had a specific gameplan tonight and the girls believed in it from start to finish," coach Matthews said. "If we can clean up silly mistakes on both ends, we have a lot of promise moving forward. Let's use this confidence heading into senior night and beyond."

Baker is now 7-7-2 on the year and 3-6-2 in Heart of America play. They will finish the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Mount Mercy for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
