CUKC College of Chiropractic Student Among Four Receiving 2022 NBCE Scholarships

Cleveland University-Kansas City student Emma Rolf, a College of Chiropractic Tri VII from Overland Park, was one of four chiropractic college students nationwide to receive $2,500 in the 2022 Annual Student Scholarship Essay Competition by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE).

Each of the four winners was selected for an “outstanding chiropractic-themed essay.” Rolf’s essay was titled “The Emerging Field of Epigenetics Gives Credence to the Chiropractic Profession.” Epigenetics studies how cells control gene activity without changing the DNA sequence.

To be eligible, applicants had to be enrolled in a U.S. Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) accredited chiropractic program and be in good academic standing. The essays needed to focus on a chiropractic-related topic such as history, philosophy, practice perspectives, jurisprudence/law, ethics, theory, sociology, politics, or social sciences.

In announcing the 2022 winners, the NBCE emphasized that the selection process was rigorous and included such criteria as demonstrating relevance to chiropractic, significance to current events or needs of the profession, scientific style, and whether the content provided new insights or new information to the chiropractic profession. Other criteria included the proper use of references and “overall level of scholarship and quality of work.”

The other winners were a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Florida, a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic, West, and a student at Northeast College of Chiropractic.

Established in 1963, the NBCE develops, administers, and scores standardized examinations for candidates seeking chiropractic licensure in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and several international countries.
