U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D., alongside Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), has introduced a resolution to designate the week of May 12 through 18, 2024 as National Police Week. The resolution has also been cosponsored by an additional 75 Senate colleagues.
Senator Marshall shared his personal connection to law enforcement, stating, “My dad was the chief of police in my hometown, and I grew up watching him put his life on the line every day to protect our community.” He continued, “Now, representing Kansas in the Senate, I’m honored to meet with law enforcement officers from across the state who work tirelessly every day to protect Kansans and uphold the rule of law. Our law enforcement officers deserve the highest level of recognition and I am proud to support this resolution alongside my Senate colleagues.”
Echoing these sentiments, Senator Graham said, “Law enforcement officers risk their lives every day for our safety as the world in which we live continues to get more dangerous. We should do everything we can to support law enforcement officers on the job, and this resolution is a small way to show our thanks. They deserve our utmost appreciation not just during National Police Week, but every day.”
Senator Durbin also emphasized the daily risks faced by law enforcement officers and highlighted that "Police Week is a chance to show officers and their families our gratitude for their sacrifices, and to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty." He further expressed his commitment "to ensuring that our officers who serve with dignity and integrity have the support and resources they need to safely and effectively do their jobs."
