U.S. Senator Roger Marshall has expressed strong opposition to the Biden-Harris Administration's newly announced rule imposing a tax on methane emissions from the oil and gas industry. The regulation, part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, was finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) this week.
Senator Marshall criticized President Joe Biden for what he described as an attack on domestic energy producers. "In his final days in the Oval Office, Joe Biden has sadly doubled down on attacks on our oil and gas producers," said Senator Marshall. He further stated that the new rule would harm small producers and hinder their operations. "Kansans spoke loudly on Election Day that they want to unleash domestic energy, and my message to the producers impacted by this Administration’s anti-energy policies and unnecessary newly imposed fees is clear: help is on the way."
The EPA's Waste Emissions Charge will begin at $900 per metric ton of methane emitted over a specific performance level reported in 2024. The fee is set to increase in subsequent years, reaching $1,200 per metric ton in 2025 and $1,500 per ton in 2026, with further annual increases planned.
