On June 3rd, 2023, at approximately 5:43 p.m., Olathe Police Officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 200 block of North Water Street.
During the course of the traffic stop, a separate and unrelated vehicle arrived on scene and the driver of that vehicle advanced on Officers armed with a knife. Two Officers discharged their department issued handguns striking the man. The man, a 58-year-old male, received medical attention by responding Officers as well as Johnson County Med-Act. He was pronounced deceased on scene. The Officers were not injured.
The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT) was activated. Investigators from multiple agencies are leading the investigation of the incident. The Johnson County Crime Lab is processing the scene.
As a matter of standard procedure, the involved Officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation by the Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team (OICIIT).
