U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. appeared on The Bottom Line on Fox Business to discuss several pressing issues facing the country. One of the topics discussed was the declining approval rate of Congress. Senator Marshall acknowledged the low numbers and expressed the need for improvement, stating, "As Congress members, we need to own these numbers and say, look, we can do better than this. But I would look at this as like a report card or like a job review. And Congress is failing right now."
Another concern raised by Senator Marshall was the issue of foreign countries purchasing American farmland. He emphasized the importance of food security and how it relates to national security, saying, "Food security is national security… We just take it for granted how we don’t have to worry about food, but it’s also used for diplomacy as well." He also mentioned an amendment proposed by Senator Rounds in the National Defense Authorization bill that aimed to restrict countries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea from owning farmland in the United States. However, Senator Marshall expressed disappointment that the amendment did not make it to the President's desk, stating, "So that’s something I’m trying to track down now as well. But there are things we can do. And yes, we should be concerned about it."
The Biden administration's decision to suspend operations at important railroad tracks days before Christmas was also a point of criticism for Senator Marshall. He argued that the administration's approach of creating one crisis and attempting to solve it only leads to the creation of another crisis. In this case, he highlighted the impact on the transportation of goods, stating, "Two of these train passes account for about 50 percent of the train cargo going in and out of Mexico. So we take some 30 people off that job to go babysit all the other people that are crossing the border illegally and then shuts it down completely."
Senator Marshall also expressed frustration regarding the administration's handling of agricultural issues. He mentioned the negative effects on farmers, such as high interest rates, fertilizer prices, and diesel prices. He added, "He doesn’t care for biofuels, he doesn’t do one major trade agreement and now he’s blowing up our number one, our best trade agreement, the USMCA trade agreement with Mexico."
In conclusion, Senator Marshall highlighted the need for improvement in Congress' approval rate, the importance of protecting American farmland, and his concerns regarding the Biden administration's approach to various crises.
