U.S. Senator Roger Marshall has joined Senator Chuck Grassley and other Republican colleagues in a letter urging President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to address abuses in the administration’s unaccompanied migrant children program. The lawmakers are calling for cooperation with Congress to eliminate these abuses and end what they describe as a cover-up by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The letter highlights that HHS has not complied with two out of three subpoenas from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other information requests related to an investigation into over 100 suspicious sponsors.
According to the lawmakers, more than 500,000 unaccompanied migrant children have crossed the southwest border under the Biden-Harris administration. They also note a significant increase in cartel trafficking activity, estimated at 2,500 percent. During this period, they claim that the administration reduced background checks for sponsors of unaccompanied children, cut back on familial DNA testing at the border, and decreased information sharing with law enforcement.
The lawmakers are urging changes to policies and procedures to end what they term a public safety crisis. They specifically call on the Biden-Harris administration to enhance information sharing with law enforcement and Congress, fully cooperate with DHS’s child exploitation investigation, and respond thoroughly to all congressional oversight requests.
“[The Biden-Harris HHS] must stop its cover-up and cooperate with law enforcement and Congress to end this crisis and protect unaccompanied children and the American people,” concluded the lawmakers.
