U.S. Senators Roger Marshall and Rick Scott, alongside U.S. Representative Andy Harris, have spearheaded a letter urging a two-step reconciliation process in the 119th Congress. The letter, directed to Senate Majority Leader-Elect John Thune and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, is backed by 26 other members from both the Senate and House.
The correspondence calls for immediate action on a reconciliation bill that focuses on "transformational America First legislation" aimed at securing the border. It also advocates for a subsequent reconciliation bill designed to prevent Democratic tax increases, extend Trump Tax Cuts, and reduce government spending through reforms proposed by the newly established Department of Government Efficiency.
The letter emphasizes that following President Trump's recent victory, Republicans hold the responsibility to support his agenda. “Following President Trump’s decisive victory, House and Senate Republicans now have a responsibility to do everything we can to help the President fulfill the promises he made to the American people," it states.
Acknowledging potential challenges due to their narrow majority in the House and filibuster rules in the Senate, the signatories believe this two-step approach offers "the best chance of securing passage" for border security legislation.
Signatories of this initiative include Senators Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, Marsha Blackburn, Ted Budd, Lindsey Graham; Representatives Chip Roy, Lauren Boebert, Josh Brecheen, Eric Burlison, Michael Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Byron Donalds, Russ Fulcher, Bob Good, Clay Higgins, Anna Paulina Luna, Mary Miller, Barry Moore, Ralph Norman, Andy Ogles, Scott Perry, Bill Posey, Tom Tiffany and Keith Self.
