U.S. Senator Roger Marshall recently appeared on NewsNation's Elizabeth Vargas Reports to discuss former President Donald Trump's tariff policies aimed at addressing the fentanyl crisis and border issues with Canada, Mexico, and China. According to Senator Marshall, these tariffs are part of Trump's "America First" foreign policy.
Marshall highlighted that shortly after Trump's announcement, leaders from Mexico and Canada engaged in negotiations, committing to manage their borders better. He stated, “This is the art of the deal. This is who Donald Trump is. I just want to emphasize that this is a drug war and not a trade war.” He also noted the serious impact of fentanyl poisoning in the U.S., comparing its annual death toll to that of the Vietnam War.
Senator Marshall pointed out that many fentanyl precursors are being produced in Canadian laboratories, urging Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take action against these facilities. He remarked, “A great day for President Trump. A huge victory for America.”
The senator praised Trump's previous use of tariffs for maintaining low inflation rates and successful trade agreements. Marshall contrasted this with current economic challenges under President Joe Biden’s administration, emphasizing increased trade deficits with Mexico and Canada since Biden took office.
Discussing support for American farmers, Marshall expressed confidence in Trump's commitment to agriculture. He recalled how Trump allocated $28 billion from tariff revenues to aid farmers during his presidency. Marshall stressed the importance of lowering interest rates as a means to support farmers financially.
Marshall concluded by reaffirming his trust in Trump’s ability to navigate these complex issues effectively: “I have faith that President Trump is going to work through all of this.”
