U.S. Senator Roger Marshall has joined forces with Senators Moran, Hoeven, and several Representatives to propose legislation aimed at transferring the Food for Peace program from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This move is intended to enhance the program's effectiveness in distributing American-grown food aid globally.

Senator Marshall emphasized the origins of Food for Peace, stating, "Food for Peace was started in Kansas by farmers who wanted to feed people in need across the world." He believes that placing the program under USDA's jurisdiction will ensure that "American grain is going to the people who need it most," aligning with efforts by President Trump and congressional leaders to reduce wasteful spending and promote American commodities.

Amy France, Chairwoman of National Sorghum Producers, expressed support for this transition: “The move of this program to USDA strengthens our ability to get food to those who need it most while supporting US sorghum farmers.” She highlighted that this shift would bolster Food for Peace's long-term success and its mission of delivering American-grown sorghum internationally.

Chris Tanner, President of Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, echoed these sentiments: “Kansas farmers take great pride in Food for Peace and the impact the program and American commodities have had on feeding the world.” He sees moving Food for Peace under USDA as a means to continue providing essential relief globally.

Adam York, CEO of Kansas Sorghum Producers Association, noted the significance of Kansas-grown sorghum in food security efforts both domestically and abroad. He urged policymakers to prioritize American agriculture as a solution within domestic and foreign policy frameworks.

Kim Z Cooper from North American Millers’ Association remarked on their role in addressing famine emergencies worldwide through programs like Food for Peace. She stated that it is a critical component of Buy American policies.

Senator Marshall has previously advocated reforms through initiatives like America’s Farmers Feed the World Act. This act aimed at restoring Food for Peace’s original purpose by utilizing U.S.-grown commodities instead of relying on foreign goods without adequate oversight.
