U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) has introduced the Passport Sanity Act, a bill that aims to restrict gender designations on U.S. passports and other State Department documents to only "male" or "female." The legislation would prevent the Secretary of State from issuing documents with an unspecified (X) gender marker and require all applications for such documents to specify either male or female.
Marshall stated, “Passports play a critical role in safeguarding our national security by confirming the true identity of individuals leaving and returning to the U.S. — which is why they must reflect factual, biological reality.” He added, “Congress should act quickly to enshrine the Passport Sanity Act into law, reinforcing the common-sense approach championed by President Trump and Secretary Rubio.”
Senator Blackburn also commented on the bill: “Passports protect national security by verifying the identity of individuals exiting and reentering our country. Radical gender ideology ignores biological reality, and the Passport Sanity Act would restore common sense to the passport system by ensuring U.S. passports accurately reflect the holder’s sex.”

The measure comes amid ongoing debate over federal policy regarding gender markers on official identification documents.
