U.S. Senator Roger Marshall has announced that the City of Liberal will receive up to $1.6 million in funding aimed at improving transportation infrastructure. The funds are designated for planning and developing a new grade separation to manage heavy truck traffic in downtown Liberal.
Senator Marshall emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “Liberal’s agriculture-based economy brings dozens of heavy trucks through the community’s downtown daily. This funding will assist the city in its efforts to develop an alternative truck route that will relieve congestion and make transit through the community’s downtown safer for all drivers.”
The financial support comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant. It will be used for various preparatory activities such as site surveys, environmental assessments, engineering plan reviews, project management planning and scheduling, and cost estimations.
The initiative aims to provide a smoother passage for both residential and pedestrian traffic by offering an alternative route for commercial vehicles passing through the city's central area.
