U.S. Senator Roger Marshall spoke on the Senate floor to honor the 67 lives lost in a tragic mid-air collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a United States Army helicopter on January 29, 2025. The resolution, which also recognized the efforts of first responders, passed unanimously.
Senator Marshall expressed his sorrow: “It’s been more than a week since that horrific night, but it feels as if it just happened hours ago. It doesn’t seem possible. In the blink of an eye, we lost 67 brave souls.”
He reflected on past tragedies and resilience: “We remember 1955 a tornado leveled the little city of Udall and 75 Kansans lost their lives...yet through it all, one thing has remained: our faith and the love and support of our families and our communities.”
Addressing those affected by the tragedy, he said: “I fear for the loved ones left behind...we want you to know you don’t stand alone, that we’re with you. We stand beside you. We’re mourning with you.”
Marshall also praised emergency responders: “I want to express my deepest gratitude for all the emergency responders...Your courage will not be forgotten.”
The resolution highlights both remembrance and gratitude during this difficult time.
