U.S. Senator Roger Marshall participated in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing for Linda McMahon, President Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Education. The hearing addressed various topics including biological boys in girls' sports, antisemitism on college campuses, and Workforce Pell Grants.
Linda McMahon has a background as a business leader and previously led the Small Business Administration under President Trump. Senator Marshall expressed confidence in her ability to lead the Department of Education.
During the hearing, Senator Marshall asked about McMahon's priorities for the department. He emphasized the importance of education based on his personal experience as a first-generation college graduate and physician. "I raised four kids in public schools," he said, expressing concern about the current state of education.
McMahon outlined her approach: “The President has given a very clear directive that he would like to look in totality at the Department of Education... we should return education to our states.” She stressed the need for localized education policies and highlighted deficiencies in current student proficiency levels.
On the topic of biological boys competing in girls' sports, McMahon stated: “I do not believe that biological boys should be able to compete against girls in sports.”
Addressing antisemitism on college campuses, she agreed with Senator Marshall's suggestion for an antisemitism commission: “Yes, I would,” she affirmed.
Regarding Workforce Pell Grants, McMahon advocated for more flexibility: “I certainly would like to see workforce Pell Grants... those are very vital to the growth of not only our economy but our businesses in general.”
The confirmation process continues as Linda McMahon seeks approval from the Senate committee.
