U.S. Senators Roger Marshall and John Cornyn, along with 28 other Senate GOP colleagues, have formally requested that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) align its policies with former President Donald Trump's Second Amendment agenda. The request was made in a letter addressed to ATF Deputy Director Marvin Richardson.
The senators are urging the ATF to revoke what they describe as unlawful firearms regulations implemented during former President Joe Biden's administration. These include the "Engaged in the Business" rule, pistol brace rule, "ghost gun" rule, and a "zero tolerance" policy for minor bookkeeping violations by federal firearm licensees.
In their letter, the senators stated: “On Friday, February 7, 2025, President Donald J. Trump took decisive action to reaffirm law-abiding Americans’ Second Amendment rights in issuing his Executive Order, Protecting Second Amendment Rights. We urge you to immediately align the ATF’s rules and policies with the President’s strong support for the Second Amendment.”
They further added: “Under former President Joe Biden, the ATF adopted numerous policies and rules that infringed upon Americans’ Second Amendment protections. President Trump’s Executive Order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to review and develop a plan of action regarding President Biden’s unlawful firearms regulations. We ask that you work with the Attorney General to quickly identify and rescind these policies.”
The letter is backed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other Republican senators including Thom Tillis, John Barrasso, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Shelley Moore Capito, Jim Justice, Jim Risch, Cynthia Lummis, Steve Daines, Ted Cruz, Kevin Cramer, Mike Crapo, James Lankford, John Hoeven, Rick Scott, Lindsey Graham, Ted Budd, Bill Hagerty, Tim Sheehy, Pete Ricketts, Bill Cassidy Joni Ernst Marsha Blackburn Todd Young Markwayne Mullin Deb Fischer Jim Banks Jerry Moran.
