U.S. Senators Roger Marshall, Joni Ernst, and Elissa Slotkin are leading a call for action to bolster fertilizer supply for farmers. Together with other Senate Agriculture Committee members, they have appealed to the U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary, Doug Burgum, to include phosphate in the U.S. Critical Minerals List alongside reinstating potash. According to the senators, this move could promote domestic production and enhance supply chains, steps deemed essential for ensuring food security and market stabilization.
The senators emphasized the urgency of the supply chain issue, advocating for a swift return to domestic potash production. Although phosphate is more readily available in the United States, the country still heavily relies on imports. The inclusion of phosphate in the Critical Minerals List is seen as a vital measure to fortify domestic fertilizer production, thereby stabilizing and securing this key supply chain.
Highlighting the impact on agriculture, the senators stated, "At the very heart of this issue are the American farmers who work tirelessly to feed Americans and much of the world. Fertilizers containing potash and phosphate are essential to maintaining soil fertility, improving crop yields, and ensuring consistent food production."
They further outlined the stakes involved, noting: "Without access to a stable and affordable supply of these minerals, farmers face higher costs, reduced yields, and increased uncertainty—challenges that threaten their livelihoods and the food security of millions of American families."
