U.S. Senator Roger Marshall appeared on Fox Business' 'The Bottom Line' to discuss former President Donald Trump’s America First trade policy, tariffs, and tax strategies. The Kansas senator sees Trump's tariffs as initial steps in trade talks aimed at boosting U.S. jobs and fairer treatment of American farmers and ranchers.
Senator Marshall highlighted the challenges American manufacturing and agriculture face due to international tariffs. "American manufacturing [and] agriculture has not been treated fairly for decades," Marshall stated, citing steep tariffs imposed by other countries, such as Europe's 50%, India's 100%, and Canada's 200% on certain American products.
Marshall also raised concerns about nontariff barriers, particularly from the European Union (EU), which he believes are more problematic than tariffs. The EU's 0% tariff stance, according to Marshall, belies the reality of restrictions on American goods like beef and wheat due to regulatory barriers.
On fiscal matters, Marshall underscored the significance of making Trump’s tax cuts permanent. "Making the Trump tax cuts permanent… would be a thrill for all of us," he said, open to further reducing the corporate tax rate to 15%. He emphasized the administration's focus on curbing federal spending and avoiding taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security.
Senator Marshall addressed the market's reaction to tariffs, characterizing it as an overreaction and stressing the importance of a long-term perspective. "I believe in America," he expressed, signaling confidence in the country’s upward trajectory.
