U.S. Senator Roger Marshall has written an op-ed in The Washington Times, urging Congress to pass the Overtime Wages Tax Relief Act. This bill aims to fulfill a promise made by former President Donald Trump to alleviate taxes on overtime pay for American workers. Senator Marshall is pushing for this legislation to be part of the FY2025 budget reconciliation package.
In his op-ed, Senator Marshall shares personal experiences from his youth, working at a sale barn in Kansas and witnessing firsthand the impact of government taxation on wages. He recalls, "Like millions of other young people over the years, I became a Republican when I got my first paycheck at the age of 16." He describes working long hours and feeling disappointed by the significant portion taken by taxes.
Senator Marshall highlights ongoing financial challenges faced by Americans due to inflation under the Biden-Harris administration. He states, "In many ways, we are still digging out from underneath the historic inflation of the Biden-Harris administration, which squeezed incomes to their breaking points."
The senator acknowledges improvements made during Trump's presidency but emphasizes that more can be done: "While President Donald Trump’s historic first 100 days have made a big difference for millions of Americans by lowering prices and making us safer, there are still more wins we can secure in Congress to help deliver for the American people."
