U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas appeared on RFD-TV to discuss President Trump's proposed legislation, referred to as the 'One Big, Beautiful Bill' (OBBB). The bill aims to prevent what Marshall describes as "the largest tax increase in American history" and includes significant allocations for agricultural support.
Marshall emphasized that the bill would allow Americans to retain more of their earnings, stating, "This is going to mean $1,000 a month of Americans getting to keep their own hard-earned money." He noted that the Republican caucus is unified in supporting these tax cuts, while Democrats are not backing them.
The OBBB proposes $100 billion in funding over ten years for crop insurance and Title One programs. Marshall expressed pride in this agricultural component: “I’m just so, so proud of what we’ve done on the agriculture portion of this.” He also highlighted provisions like bonus depreciation and 199A as vital for farmers.
Marshall discussed the importance of a tax credit known as 45Z, which he believes is crucial for rural America. This credit could help convert soybeans or corn into jet fuel.
Regarding healthcare, Marshall assured that Medicaid and Medicare protections are priorities: “We’re going to protect Medicaid. We’re going to make it better.” He linked strong agricultural economies with healthier hospital systems in rural areas.
On strengthening SNAP benefits, Marshall advocated for work requirements: “70% of Americans want some type of work requirements.” He emphasized job training opportunities available in rural areas.
As for next steps with the OBBB, Marshall indicated ongoing negotiations: “It’s the seventh inning stretch when we get pen to paper by this weekend.” He reiterated his commitment to advocating for rural America and agriculture during these discussions.
