U.S. Senator Roger Marshall from Kansas has collaborated with Senator Rick Scott of Florida to propose the Locating Every Disbursement in Government Expenditure Records (LEDGER) Act. The purpose of this legislation is to mandate the tracking of all payments by the U.S. Department of Treasury. This move comes in response to findings by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that $4.7 trillion in payments were missing necessary traceability codes, making them untraceable.

Senator Marshall highlighted the dire state of the national debt, which has surpassed $36 trillion, with over $1 trillion spent on interest payments last year. He attributes this financial situation to significant waste, fraud, and abuse within the government. Emphasizing the importance of accountability, Senator Marshall stated, "The latest revelation that $4.7 trillion in Treasury payments were missing important traceability codes is disgraceful. The American people deserve answers and accountability."

Senator Scott echoed concerns about government spending, stating that the federal debt increased by $8 trillion recently, reaching a total of $36 trillion, alongside a $2 trillion deficit. Reflecting on the recent financial oversight discoveries, he said, "Like many Americans, I was outraged by DOGE’s findings that the U.S. Treasury made $4.7 trillion in payments that were completely unmarked, unlabeled and therefore, untraceable and unaccountable to the American people."

The LEDGER Act seeks to ensure that all Treasury payments are accounted for by requiring comprehensive traceability, a step that both senators believe is crucial for financial responsibility and to support ongoing efforts to reduce wasteful government spending. According to Senator Scott, such financial oversight aligns with the practices of American families and businesses that maintain budgets by closely monitoring expenditures. He expressed confidence in applying this "common sense" approach to federal spending.
